1. The Scopes Trial-convicted of teaching evolution in his biology class John Scopes was fined. The states butler acts made teaching this illegal.
2. Prohibition- The Banning of the manufacture and sale of Alcoholic beverages in order to prevent the social issues they believed it caused.
3. Flappers- A new class of woman that embraced the new clothes that showed more of the woman’s body, they drank and smoked in public, and were looked down on by the older style thinking women.
4. Economic issues- Overproduction and Credit issues caused enormous debt for the American people.
5. Dust bowl- Over farming caused poor soil which when coupled with a large drought large sums of dust were blown as far as the east coast.
6. Agricultural Issues- Farms could no longer keep up with the cost because of an increase in cost of production and European demand disappeared causing prices to dive to lows that would not support a farm.
7. Immigration policies- U.S. citizens thought that they would be better without the immigrants. Quotas were enforced. 2% of ethnic groups in1890 census.
8. Nativism- The belief that American born people were better than all other kinds of people. Lead to a rebirth of thee KKK. This one against all others not just African Americans.
9. Significant literary works- Incited a feeling of free speech in the American Public. They began to speak out because of these books.
10. The Great Migration- a large number of African Americans moved from the southern states to the Northern states.
11. Harlem Renaissance- Cultural movement of African American artists. African Americans began to take pride in their works.
12. Sacco and Venzetti- Convicted of armed robbery and murder. Both men executed in April of 1927.
13. Labor issues- Labor Laws were abolished and workers lost a lot of rights they had under those laws.
14. The red scare- the color Red meant Communism. Because people were afraid of those who displayed un-American behaviors the Palmer Raids were allowed to continue. These were raids of “communist” organizations that had no real evidence and they were denied a fair trial.
15. Schneck V. The United States- Spy and Sedation acts were allowed to continue thanks to this Supreme Court decision.
